One of the world's most precious Rose oil today comes from Bulgaria and makes one of the symbols of the small european country. It is known as "The Queen of the Essential Oils", made from the special sort rose Rosa Damascena Mill.

The first plants from this type came in Bulgaria from Damascus (Syria) around 350 years ago. In this region, between Stara Planina (Balkan Mountains) and Sredna Gora, the rose finds the most favorable climate for growing.

The rose oil production is seasonal process. The rose bushes flower for about 25 days a year from mid-May to mid-June. The blooms are picked by hand early in the morning when the aroma is strongest, and transported in small quantities to the distillery. Seedlings come from the Rose Research Institute at Kazanluk, which  has developed several Damascena rose varieties suited to conditions in the valley.  Every year, during the first weekend of June, is  organized the annual Rose Festival. The first festival took place 108 years ago, in 1903.

Saturation, richness and uniqueness of Bulgarian rose oil aroma dues to the specific environmental and geographical conditions – appropriate temperature, high humidity, sandy soil. Protection of the mountain from strong winds, also the efforts of many Bulgarian scientists in the field of cultivation and selection of Damascena rose have contributed to the development of rose production in Bulgaria. The Bulgarian rose oil is extracted through water-steam distillation. The same method of distillation was used 340 years ago, when rose producing has emerged in Bulgarian lands. It speaks of a perfect professionalism among our ancestors.
