It is a helpful medicine with a thousand-year-old application in medicinal practice and aromatherapy. If used for its aroma a vial will last a lifetime. 

Various parts of the world specialize in growing and distilling their own species of roses for specialized and high quality oils such as the Bulgarian rose. The Bulgarian rose (Rosa Damascena) is considered to produce the finest rose oil in the world. Bulgaria is the second largest producer of rose oil in the world.

The Rosa Damascena, the oil giving rose, is cultivated in the famed Valley of Roses, an area of 14 000 square kilometers to the south of the Balkan Range. This perfect location and climate, with gentle sunshine, ensures minimum release of the aromatic ingredients from the flower.  The roses bloom in May and June and fill the air in the whole region with their sweet, intoxicating scent. Rose petals are collected early in the morning before dawn and are steam distilled into rose oil, an essential ‘top note’ ingredient in quality perfumes and cosmetics products. It takes 3000 -4000 kg of rose petals to make 1 kg of rose oil.
